Keeper of the Lost Cities Series by Shannon Messenger

Shannon Messenger’s Keeper of the Lost Cities is a major upper-middle-grade fantasy series that follows Sophie Foster, a telepathic human girl who discovers she is actually an elf engineered by a secret rebel organization. Over the course of numerous expansive novels and companion books, Sophie navigates the magical politics of the Lost Cities, an elite elvin academy, and the dangerous ideological conflict between the Black Swan and the Neverseen. The narrative combines a classic portal fantasy and school setting with complex themes involving genetic ethics, institutional corruption, and found family. Despite mixed critical trade reviews, the saga has cultivated an intensely devoted, long-term fandom through its rich world-building, high-stakes conspiracies, and memorable ensemble cast. Although film adaptations have moved between major Hollywood studios like Disney and Warner Bros., the core journey remains anchored in its extensive book publications as it builds toward its planned conclusion, Elysian.
